DRE is excited to announce
the first CoreFlex project in Ontario. Duron Ontario is the
first certified CoreFlex installer in the Ontario market.
Their crew went through a 3-day intensive training program
and work on the project in downtown Toronto is underway.
CoreFlex
was chosen for this project since the area is extremely critical
and simply cannot leak. The water test determined that there
were high levels of contamination in the soil. CoreFlex is
a reinforced thermoplastic membrane integrally bonded to an
Active Polymer Core layer. The two-barrier system provides
superior waterproofing protection. For more information on
CoreFlex, see the article below.
In last month's newsletter, we discussed the new Canadian
VOC laws and how they will impact the Sealer market. The biggest
change is that 40% silane technology will not comply with
the new standards and cannot be sold in Canada. Chem-Trete
BSM 400 will be available in place of Chem-Trete 40 VOC.
See the article below for more information on Chem-Trete BSM
400.
As always, your comments are appreciated. Please email me

Protectosil
CHEM-TRETE BSM 400
Chem-Trete®
BSM 400: Pure solvent-free silane formulation designed
for brick masonry. Pluses: no masking for windows required,
low temperature application, 20 year warranty.
PRODUCT
DESCRIPTION
Protectosil CHEM-TRETE BSM 400 brings you the next generation
in silane technology. The Evonik chemists have developed a
pure silane that yields a water repellent with the longest
service life available, unsurpassed performance on brick masonry
and the lowest possible levels of volatile organic compounds.
Protectosil CHEM-TRETE BSM 400 can be applied in the most
extreme temperature conditions without changing the surface
appearance of the substrate.
By penetrating the surface and creating a chemical bond, Protectosil
CHEM-TRETE BSM 400 permanently attaches to the substrate.
It is ideal for use on exterior above-grade brick masonry,
concrete and most natural stones.
By reducing the amount of water entering the substrate, Protectosil
CHEM-TRETE BSM 400 reduces the intrusion of waterborne contaminants
such as acid rain, salt and dirt, and reduces the deteriorating
effects of these contaminants, including spalling, scaling,
efflorescence, leaching and staining.
Because of the purity of Protectosil CHEM-TRETE BSM 400, it
will not leave a residue on nonporous substrates such as glass
windows, metal frames or painted surfaces.
APPROPRIATE APPLICATIONS
For use on brick masonry, to protect against the ingress of
wind-driven rain. For use on vertical concrete structures,
to protect the reinforcing steel from corrosion due to the
effects of water and other waterborne contaminants.
Reduces the effects of mildew, efflorescence, and stains on
vertical concrete and masonry buildings.
Imparts water repellency to a substrate for an extended time.
Provides resistance against acid rain, alkali attack and other
atmospheric pollutants.

NEW
ASTM Specification for
Permeability Rate
ASTM is
in the process of developing a specification for a minimum
product permeability rate for negative side water vapor reduction
products. This new perm rate will significantly affect the
market and all manufacturers involved in water vapor reduction
products. Currently their is no published ASTM minimum or
acceptable "perm" rate for existing products that
proclaim to be negative side vapor barriers and vapor reduction
products. The only current ASTM perm rate specification is
for the positive or below slab vapor barriers. The (ASTM)
reasoning behind this new specification is to ensure that
if a vapor barrier below the slab is not used or is compromised,
the moisture mitigation on top of the slab will have to meet
the same specification (0.1 perms) as the below slab vapor
barrier. This would make the perm ratings for both positive
and negative side products equal.
The ASTM committee that is working on this specification is
the F06 Committee. The F06 Committee's mission statement:
"The promotion of knowledge, the stimulation of research,
the development of specifications, test methods, definitions
and nomenclature, and practices for resilient floor coverings,
including linoleum, vinyl, vinyl composition, asphalt, rubber,
cork, and the like, in which the wearing surface is non-textile."
The work of this Committee will be coordinated with other
ASTM Committees and other organizations having mutual interests.
The effect that this new specification will have is that any
product sold or advertised to be a negative side vapor barrier
or a moisture mitigation system on must then meet a permeability
rating of 0.1 perms. The F06 committee has had one reading
and comment period on the specification. The ASTM committee
is scheduled to meet in early May to review and comment on
this new specification. It is apparent from the interest in
this specification that it may be in place by 2010.
Koester American is currently testing the VAP
I 2000 materials performance to this new specification
at two separate independent laboratories. Koester moisture
mitigation systems are film forming on the surface of the
concrete and have a respective vapor reduction of 84% for
the VAP
I pH; and 94% for the VAP I 2000. Koester's moisture mitigation
products are engineered for the express purpose of vapor reduction
and alkalinity control and they have been subjected to the
E-96 wet method of testing in which all the Koester products
have passed.

American Corp for the above information.

UNIVERSAL 90's
Watertight, Factory
Fabricated Upturn/Downturn Transition Pieces For Ensuring
Continuity of Seal
Factory-Fabricated
Terminations and Transitions - as in all EMSEAL expansion
joint systems, continuity of seal through changes in plane
and direction is an essential performance differentiator.
EMSEAL precompressed, coated, foam sealants are manufactured
in straight-run sticks which can be joined in the field to
EMSEAL's patent-pending "Universal-90"
Transitions and Terminations. Universal-90's are available
for all* of EMSEAL's coated microsphere-modified-acrylic-impregnated
foam sealant products including COLORSEAL,
SEISMIC
COLORSEAL, HORIZONTAL
COLORSEAL, DSM,
CHEMSEAL,
BEJS,
DSF,
and EMSHIELD
DFR2. They have the same performance waterproofing and
additional characteristics of the system of which they are
manufactured. (*Universal-90's for SJS are available as custom
manufactured pieces. Contact EMSEAL for specific requirements).
These factory-fabricated
single-piece 90-degree units have a 12-inch long leg and a
6-inch vertical piece on each end of the elbow. The Universal-90's
are symmetrically coated on both sides. This allows them to
be installed as an upturn or as a downturn.
Universal-90
Transitions are cut at 90-degrees with both ends open for
a butt-connection to another stick or another Universal-90.
Either leg can be trimmed in the field to connect to straight
run material or to another Universal-90 when going, for example,
up and over a curb, into a parapet, or up and down treads
and risers. Universal-90 Terminations end, on the 6-inch leg,
in a 45o sealed and mitered end. This allows termination as
a stand alone upturn or provides a surface against to which
a wall joint system can be married. Flipped over, the Universal-90
termination unit can be alternatively installed as a downturn
termination where a joint runs off the deck. In this use,
the sealed, mitered end provides a drip edge for drainage
of water off the joint. In addition to guaranteeing a continuous
waterproof coating, EMSEAL's "Universal-90's" allow
for much faster and secure installation by eliminating field
cutting or notching and bending at angles.
USES
For expansion joints in decks and floors where watertightness
and/or traffic durability are required. A few applications
examples are:
· Stadiums · Arenas ·Parking Decks ·
Floors
· Deck-To-Wall · Elevator Tower Perimeters
· Deck-to-Deck · Deck-To-Wall
· Bridge Expansion Joints · Water Tanks
· Stair Tower Perimeters ·Tunnels and Enclosures
Can be used
alone or under any other expansion joint cover, plate or filler
where depth of substrate allows.

FEATURES
Watertight
Universal-90's are a component of the specific EMSEAL coated
impregnated-foam products installed with a tensionless watertight
bellows.
Non-Invasive Anchoring - There are no hard metal-to-substrate
connections with Universal-90 transitions or terminations.
This includes embedded pins, anchors, screws, bolts or tracks,
trays or rails, flanges or coverplates. The system is locked
to the joint faces by means of the backpressure of the foam,
epoxy in some cases, and the injected sealant bands at the
joint face.
Versatility - Universal-90's are coated on both
sides (regardless of the single or dual coating nature of
the EMSEAL impregnated-foam product with which they are joined).
This allows them to be sealed to any side of water contact
when turned in any 90-degree position. All Universal-90 pieces
can function as an inside or outside corner.
Joint-Size Variation - Uniform bellows appearance,
and the ability to handle variations in joint size through
size-switching makes the Universal-90's and their respective
coated, precompressed foam system aesthetically and functionally
versatile.

CoreFlex
60
CoreFlex
60 offers the ultimate in waterproofing barrier protection
technology. The barrier performance starts with a thermoplastic
membrane with welded seams providing a monolithic watertight
barrier layer. The thermoplastic membrane is reinforced with
a weft inserted knit polyester reinforcement fabric and is
produced with DuPont's Elvaloy-KEE® (Keytone Ethylene
Ester), a solid phase high molecular weight ethylene interpolymer.
Unlike traditional liquid PVC plasticizers, the Elvaloy-KEE
does not experience phase separation and migrate out; thus
the membrane properties are maintained for long term performance.
Elvaloy-KEE also provides superior chemical resistance properties.
The Active Polymer Core layer is integrally bonded to the
Elvaloy-KEE thermoplastic membrane. The APC layer is designed
to activate with water to swell and form a positive seal.
Thereby, at any unforeseen puncture or installation defect,
the APC layer reacts at the breach, self-sealing to stop the
water ingress. CoreFlex is the only welded thermoplastic membrane
composite with this reactive, self-sealing performance feature.
APPLICATIONS
The CoreFlex 60 waterproofing system provides waterproofing
protection for structural concrete surfaces. Below-grade applications
include backfilled cast-in-place concrete and masonry block
foundation walls as well as property line shoring walls such
as soldier pile and lagging. The membrane can be continued
under the floor slab and up onto a horizontal deck to provide
a continuous, uniform waterproofing system. CoreFlex 60 can
be used to waterproof structures under continuous or intermittent
hydrostatic pressure. CoreFlex 60 applications include: Plaza
Decks, Split-Slab Deck Construction, Foundation Walls, Earth-Covered
Structures, Property Line Construction, Under Slab, Tunnels
and Greenroofs.
